evaluation for the tea and toast show

Evaluation:
Tea and toast:
The tea and toast radio show presented by Amy Ford and Sam Steel was aimed at the student age. 16-24. the show was well presented particularly by Sam, as he was generally upbeat, and his voice was clear and easy to listen to.
I didn’t participate as much as I would have hoped to, but I did help to create the original logo which was later changed. Georgie being the producer I think gave the group a fire to work as a group and make the show as good as it could have possibly been, I think this is because she works well with others and tries her best to let everyone be heard, even if some of us did not get the opportunity.
By the time we were ready to broadcast I had become a little despondent with the show and the group as I was made to feel like I could not help in the ways I could have. My strengths were not needed, so I had decided to detach myself from the show.
I felt like the I-dents and sound beds were unoriginal, and some it sounded as though they had used them before, however the script written by Amy must have been increasingly difficult, especially when remembering the timings for the playlist.
The Music used for the playlist had been taken from the charts of the naughties... e.g. Basement Jaxx and Gwen Stefani, Which I believe could have been slightly more recent as a lot of these artist have not released tracks for a number of years, although the majority f the public would know these song and would happily sing along to them. There were present songs used also, such as Bruno Mars and Eliza Doolittle which I think brought a fresher spark to the show; like the Chris Moyle’s show.
From what I am aware they tried to base the show on Radio 1’s daily morning show by Chris Moyle’s. I don’t think that they show has the professional touch that the radio 1 team have, but then again, the group did well with what they had to offer. The banter was sufficient and the easy to listen to and was occasionally very funny.
The features were thorough, but I felt a little irrelevant to the show and did not incorporate the cause for the assignment ‘children in need’ enough. But in spite of this Millie fit well with the ‘know your lyrics’ feature well, as she was funny and easy to listen to. The prank call feature I felt was ‘supposed’ to be hilarious, but wasn’t, this was disappointing, because I was looking forward to listening to something with a bit more funny substance.
Sometimes I felt like the mixing desk operator was struggling to get the I-dents onto the playing track at the right time before the dialogue of the presenters, sometimes it was off time. This although did not affect the feel of the show, and the upbeat and fast pace of the show shined through the problems that they were faced with.
Because the show was aimed at the target audience it was, I believe the presenters felt like they could be themselves, making their banter and chat about subjects that the audience would relate to. I think overall both shows came to a successful conclusion, even if there were things I would have done differently.

evaluation for the encore show

Evaluation
The encore show:
Our peers and I had decided after a long brain storm to attempt at producing an hour long afternoon radio broadcast aimed at an audience of ‘mostly’ females between the ages of 18 and 50.
I wasn’t given a particular role for the encore show. But for the pre-production I was given the news writer role. So I had the opportunity to find some research on the current musical shows on the west end in particular. I found that most of the research came from the cast and the feedback that came from the audiences of the shows.
This wasn’t a difficult task as we had discovered the west end musical community to be larger and a lot more varied than expected. The audience research we collected was positive toward the show and musicals in general. Most of the subjects in which I had collected data from said that they enjoyed musicals and specified which musicals they liked best. A common favourite was Billy Elliott.
I had also created a musical show review to be played though-out the show for blood brothers which was also unused. Many of the features were simple but I think that they would have been inapt due to the minimalist approach to the show in general. Unfortunately neither of my features were used, and I was dropped as news reader from the show also. I felt this counted me out of the production itself, as I would have liked to have been included.
The group had come to the conclusion that it was best not to use sound-beds during the show, as the listener would find what they were listening to ‘too busy’. I personally didn’t agree with this decision, as I feel when listening to the radio, no sound-beds can often make the dialogue feel too intense, and sometimes boring.
The only thing I felt that was wrong with the data collecting process that we had put forward was I believe that the research wasn’t detailed enough, but eventually we had come to the conclusion that the research that we had was enough to form the basis of the show from.
Esme was a good presenter using the others in the workshop to create a relaxed projection. Using slow pace and short pauses between subjects helped her mode of address to become easier to listen to.
I think the incorporation with the children in need show was well thought out though. This is because the target audience needed to be for all ages, and I think the show was definitely a family show, with an easy listening play list and light hearted entertainment. The show was very unlike the other shows that the rest of the tutor had broadcast, particularly different from subcity.
Elaine Page’s Radio 2 show was the main professional show that as a group we had analysed. We were able to compare our own show with hers to change the sections of the show that weren’t relevant or up to the standard that we wanted them. Through Page’s show we were also able to help base our music playlist style.
Many of the people that were involved in the making of the encore show felt that the show needed to be strictly based around musicals and the west end, I think that the show could have been a lot more varied in its content, perhaps including more trivial content such as the history behind musical and theatre (Shakespeare and Dickens).

research into platforms (in store radio)

Store Radio – Asda fm
Asda fm is based in all the asda stores around the UK. The Listening figures are high; this is because the consumers of the asda stores are included in the figures.
The station is funded by the intakes of the company, so the shows are mainly music based. Many companies have a store radio e.g. HMV but they are harder to come by that asda, which is easier to access.

research into platforms (local radio)

Local Radio – Touch fm
Touch fm is broadcast locally and only listeners within a certain small radius of the station can hear it. Most areas in the United Kingdom have a local Radio station e.g. Glasgow - Radio Clyde, Birmingham – BRMB and London (general and entertainment) – Capital Radio.
Local radio is not PSB, it is commercially funded so the content is restricted by the content of the advertisements.

research into platforms (international radio)

International Radio – Radio 1
Radio 1 broadcast not just to the United Kingdom but the show is available in other countries as well. The show is PSB, because the show is not funded commercially the station is able to be versatile in their programming.
BBC world service is also International. This helps to keeps listening figures high as listeners from foreign origin are included, as are listeners on the internet and digital television.

research into differences between PSB and commercial radio

PSB - Public service broadcasting includes television, radio and all other outlets that the media content can be seen or heard e.g. The Internet. the BBC is the main british public service broadcaster in the UK. The British 'public' payed a licensing fee of £142.50 a year, thats £11.88 a months or 40p a day between April 2009 and March 2010. the licensing fee has now gone up £145.50 a year for a Technicolor television license.
The public, because of this licensing fee expect a high quality of broadcasting and programming, showing versatility.

the british broadcasting company ltd employed John Reith as general manager , and then in 1923 became Managing Director, and made the BBC what it is today, and therefore creating the Reithian values ( to inform, educate and entertain ) which are still in play today.

Commercial - all other commercial television channels and radio stations in the United Kingdom have to use advertisments to fund their programming, e.g. ITV and Touch fm.
Advertising on the Radio enable the station to claim a fee off the company requesting distribution of their advertisments.
Therefore supply the station or channel with funding to broadcast.

blood brothers review

INT. AUDIO WORKSHOP

Blood Brothers Musical review

The recently refurbished ‘west end musical’ blood brothers, written by Willy Russell and now Directed by Bob Thomson, had brought smiles and tears to all that watch it.
This moving play, with a new cast had has been said to be “Outstanding” and “Brilliant!” with most praising Niki Evans’ performance as Mrs Johnston saying “What a voice!” The general consensus from the audience has been particularly positive.
The Play is about two brothers that have been separated at birth and are then brought to close encounters due to anger. One living with his natural mother (Mrs Johnston), and the other with her employer; abusing him since he was young.
The play lasts 2hrs and 45mins, which will go very quickly as the show draws you in.
The main reason that the show has done so well, is definitely due to the cast, which is unfortunate because the director and the cast change regularly.
There have been 133 reviews on the reviewcentre.com from the audience and the overall average came out at 4.4 out of 5, this was including one professional critic review and value for money.

INT. AUDIO WORKSHOP

I’m Jessica and you’re listening to your regular update of west end news!
Sister act the musical is on at the London Palladium seven days a week and has had excellent reviews saying it’s funny, outrageous but very tasteful and suitable for all ages. A New mother Superior was revealed recently to be Sally Dexter after Whoopi Goldberg played her role for just three weeks in august. The new show nun has made appearances in Billy Elliott as Teacher Mrs Wilkinson and Bad Girls the Musical back in 2007at the Garrick Theatre, alongside her the Blue singer Simon Webb playing Curtis Shank and Dad’s Army’s Ian Lavender playing Monsignor. The show will unfortunately end this month on the 30th after a four month run, but will be replaced by none other than the Wizard of Oz.
The show starring Danielle Hope starts next year, and they are getting ready as tickets are on sale now! The hit show hosted by Graham Norton “Over the Rainbow” finished over the summer, and left us with a vivacious and daring Dorothy. The show is on seven days a week.
Chicago is coming up to the end of its five year run next year, and everyone involved in the fantastic show case is absolutely devastated it’s going to end. BUT, the powers that be have decided to tour the US, so it sounds like it’s not quite over yet, as the show has done so well in the UK. Starting in Florida, then to Ohio and Orlando and then to Memphis the show will only be in the states for a month. The tickets are on sale and you can purchase them online at www.chicagothemusical.com

That’s all from me today guys, back to you .....

rajar - research into listening figures

this chart shows the listenign figures of all the shows covered by rajar.

Because I have analysed Radio 1 as part of my textual analysis , I will be focusing on the figures for Radio 1 for 2010.

since the last time I had a look at rajars listening figure count for Radio 1 it has increased considerably. Showing that the average changes within a very short space of time frequently through out the year.
The chart shows that Radio 1 has reached this year to date 116,470 listeners , who on average listen to the station for 1.9 hours per head.

Interestingly though, Radio 2's figure are considerably higher by around 20,000, reaching 136,820 so far this year. as a young listener I would have expected Radio 1's figure to be higher as Radio 1 seems to be alot more popular with its target audience.

Textual Analysis for music based prgramming

Music based programming analysis
• Chris Moyle’s breakfast show (Radio 1)
• Fern Cotton show (Radio 1)
• Afternoon Drive (Touch fm)
• My SCR

When listening to the above radio shows online, one major point came to light, and this was
That on touch fm (afternoon drive) there was more adverts than anything else, this must make it dificult for local radio stations to get the listeners, and also made it not fluid and unenjoyable to listen to. It was interesting to listen to touch fm in the afternoon, as I realised why so many people tune in to Radio one through the day rather than other radio shows (Rajar shows that in June 2010 radio 1 gathered up 118,100 listeners which is considerably more than other radio station individually). I do think that this is pushed because of the absence of advertising; also Radio 1’s mode of address is fresh, funny and interesting.
The news on both the Chris Moyle’s show and the fern cotton show is fast paced, lasting maximum a time of 3 minutes, so that the listener does not get distracted by something else and tune out of the station. I have found that this works for me, but for an older target audience this could be disappointing. Touch fm’s news was slightly longer , but not a lot longer; between 3 and 4 minutes , but the reading style was a lot more formal and I found that the news reader didn’t address the audience personally as much as Tina daheley. Tina focused on news from around the country particularly tabloid news and sport and I noticed that there was no travel news although there was a quantity of weather updates. Her pitch was low and fast paced suggesting the content was serious, but informative.
I also noticed that Chris Moyle’s uses others in the studio to create banter and laughter, which is infectious, the idea is to make the listener laugh as the presenter laughs, because even if the listener doesn’t find the joke funny they will laugh, there were long pauses used in this perticular part of the show suggesting a punch line, this is often used in comedy sketches. When he spoke, particularly when delivering punch lines, he was high pitched; this proves the content in which he is delivering to be satire. Music style on the fern Cotton show is very much chart based, and most of the tracks played by her have been released in the last year, however when listening to touch fm and My SCR, the music playlists where a lot more varied and would appeal to most target audiences, particularly touch fm played a lot 80’s pop and ballads including ‘Patrick Swayze –She’s like the wind’ and ‘Ben E King – Stand by me ‘
Although there are many differences and contrasts in the mode of address throughout the different radio shows, I have found similarities in touch fm’s presenting style and the Chris Moyle’s show presenting approach. The chat and banter between the studio guests and presenters is very similar in style.
On the fern cotton show, she has no-one in the studio with her to help her present the show, so she uses music to its optimum capacity to keep the listener interested, her prejection was relaxed and flowed well through her speech although her pace was fast, and used long paused in between sentances, to try and elongate the dialogue. Although she is on her own, this helps her to be more direct to the listener, it makes the experience more personal perticularly if you are listening in private. She does talk to the listeners but for a very short amount of time, keeping her pitch low and relaxing and her pace slow when talking about topics, but fast when she is introducing a song she also uses phone ins, and emails to create topics. The interview with Kim Kardashian was very different from the rest of the show, the pitch was alot lower, and there was alot less pause inbetween what they were saying to each other, I think this was to make it less boring for the listeners. When she stated that you could view her (the presenter fern cotton) and Kim having their interview through webcam live on the website. The Radio one shows both Chris Moyle’s and Fern Cotton, you were able to do this, which I think is used as another medium of introducing people to the station. This helps encourage members of the public who don’t enjoy radio because of the lack of visuals to become listeners of the station. It also helps the listener to understand what is going on in the studio.
Whilst I found this a particularly promising new medium, I was disappointed to find that My SCR and Touch fm did not include this medium into their shows. But once I had thought about why this could be, my conclusion to this was that there are so many adverts on both of these commercial radio shows that there would be no point in using it.
My SCR, like the Fern Cotton show, was nearly completely music based. There was very little chat, and when the presenter did chat, it was very mellow and relaxed. The music and chat was frequently interrupted by a short introductory advertisement. This would be a good thing if you enjoy on music to listen to but I enjoy some chat for Background Company, and a lot of the time it is funny. This could be again disappointing to the listener. The Music on My SCR was overall of a rock and dance genre, and would not appeal to a wider target audience.

research into platforms for broadcasting music programmes

I have been looking into digital radio through the television as most televisions have a wide range of radio stations built into them.
You will be able to recieve all BBC channels including BBC 1xtra and BBC 6 music. There are other channels such as absolute radio, Kiss fm and Smas hits.
The radio stations that feature on the televsion channels are mainly music based , and there is very little chat. Excluding BBC 5 live.
Radio on digital television was introduced in 2006 when plasma displays where introduced.
